India avoid follow-on; Raina ton on debut

News posted by www.newsinfoline.com

Suresh Raina notched up a century on debut besides putting on a 236-run partnership with veteran Sachin Tendulkar as India avoided the follow on to reach 477 for four in their first innings at lunch on the fourth day of the second Test against Sri Lanka here on Thursday.Raina (112) Tendulkar (152) were holding fort for the visitors at the break in reply to Sri Lanka's first innings mammoth total of 642/4 declared.Overnight 382 for four, India needed 51 more runs to avoid the follow at the start of play on Thursday.Tendulkar, after a lot of waiting and watching, pushed debutant off spinner Suraj Randiv along the carpet to the cover boundary as he began bridging the still large first innings deficit.Raina compounded Randiv's anxiety as he swatted the lanky bowler to the long off boundary for the first six of the day.The 150-run partnership between the two came in 156 minutes and 243 balls and marked the highest fifth wicket partnership for India against Sri Lanka. India's 400 came in 686 balls.Raina also incidentally became the 12th debutant century maker for India as he and Tendulkar reached a 200-run partnership in 334 balls.Earlier, the stout Raina did well to drill a short-pitched Dilhara Fernando delivery between extra cover and mid off for boundary.Tendulkar, on his part, executed a perfectly-timed square cut to a 140 kph Prasad delivery as India inched towards a position of safety.Dammika Prasad rattled Tendulkar with a short-pitched delivery which hit the Indian's helmet and raced to the boundary.Meanwhile, Tendulkar accompalished his 150 with the help of a six and 20 fours. He reached the milestone in 261 balls.

Indian bowling doesn`t justify top ranking: Waugh

News posted by www.newsinfoline.com

While many would credit former captain Steve Waugh for making Australia a world-beating side, the man himself credits a little-known match in the 1998 Commonwealth Games - the only time cricket was included in the multi-discipline event - for the turnaround.Australia had made it to the finals back then, where they lost to South Africa. "During that game, we did not prepare hard enough. We lost to South Africa and won the silver medal. Although winning that silver is still one of my proudest moments, we had lost a gold medal which we should have won," Waugh told The Indian Express. "That was very painful. After that loss, the team made a pact that we would never lose again for lack of effort. I believe that that defeat was the catalyst for our team's success in the future," he added.Waugh said he continues to be passionate about the CWG and remains hopeful that cricket would be reintroduced. When asked about his role in the forthcoming games in October, Waugh said he had, in fact, been approached to be a part of Australia's Commonwealth Games squad in a motivational role and wanted to be a part of the Games but other work commitments prevented him from doing so.Waugh, however, said that the era of Australian dominance in cricket across all three formats - Tests, ODI's and T20's - was over. He said while the Aussies were still the team to beat in the limited overs format, there were "4-5 teams who are equally good" in Test cricket. However, Waugh was not convinced about India's merits of figuring in that group. "Realistically, with their current bowling attack, they do not seem like the World No1 side, although that is what the rankings say."But he admitted it was unfair to judge the Indian bowling on the basis of their performance in Colombo, a wicket he termed "unfair to bowlers".However, he praised the Pakistani bowling in the Leeds Test, which Pakistan had won, singling out Mohammad Aamer as "the superstar of the future."The 45-year-old Waugh denied that he would be coaching an IPL team next season, saying although he had been approached by a few franchises, the job entailed a commitment he was unwilling to make. "The only cricket I play now is in the backyard with my son," he signed off.

With world`s `best` bowlers, Butt ready to host England

News posted by www.newsinfoline.com

Pakistan will begin a four-Test series against England on Thursday in the belief that its young side is about to start a new era in the national game. "It's a new beginning for Pakistan cricket, and especially for a young side," Butt said as he prepared for Thursday's start. "To win against the world's best is always an achievement. We would have loved to have done it in front of our home crowd, but we need to tell them that we love them and we hope we will be playing in front of them soon."The bowling attack in particular attracted lavish praise from the captain. "Mohammad Aamer is definitely one of the best bowlers in the world at the moment," Butt said. "If not the best then certainly in the top three and Mohammad Asid is the best bowler with the new ball I have seen since Glenn McGrath."There are few mysteries concerning the England lineup, with Pakistan set to run into Graeme Swann, the spinner with the most wickets in the world in 2010. England's selectors named a 12-man squad on Sunday and publicly stated a preference for six batsmen, meaning the only outstanding selection issue concerns which of the five bowlers will be the 12th man. Stuart Broad and Swann are certain to play on their home ground, which leaves James Anderson, Steven Finn and Tim Bresnan competing for the two remaining places.

News posted by www.newsinfoline.com

New York, July 29 (ANI): If media reporters are hoping to catch an aerial view of Chelsea Clinton's wedding, they better have a contingency plan.According to The New York Times, The Federal Aviation Administration has decided to ban flights below 2,000 feet for the area surrounding the estate on the Hudson River where Clinton is to be married. The F.A.A. also routinely bans flights at the request of the Secret Service when a senior federal official or dignitary's safety is at issue. In this case, with the mother of the bride being the secretary of state and the father a former president, that was the concern.A spokeswoman for the F.A.A. said Wednesday that the Secret Service had requested the flight restriction. Holbrooke says corruption helps Taliban to win recruits

News posted by www.newsinfoline.com

Washington, July 29 (ANI): US President Barack Obama's Special Envoy to Pakistan and Afghanistan Richard C Holbrooke has claimed that rampant corruption in Afghanistan is providing the Taliban with its number one recruiting tool. The New York Times quoted Holbrooke, as saying that in the light of this, Washington was taking adequate precautions to cut down the misuse of aid to Afghanistan."If you read Taliban propaganda, which we study very carefully, they never mention the issue of women, girls in school, because that was their most losing issue. What they talk about is corruption, which is why we're here. That's their No. 1 recruiting tool. We're not missing money," Holbrooke said at a hearing of the House subcommittee that oversees financing of the State Department and the United States Agency for International Development.Holbrooke acknowledged that some of the money probably came from illegal activities like drug trafficking. He said corruption was still endemic in Afghanistan, describing it as a "malignancy" that could destroy everything the United States was trying to achieve there. (ANI)

British kids taken to India, Pakistan don`t come back

News posted by www.newsinfoline.com

London, July 29 (IANS) A huge number of British children are taken by one of their parents to an overseas country, including India and Pakistan, and never returned, officials said Thursday. The number of British children 'abducted' by a parent and taken overseas has risen by 39 percent in 2009, the child abduction department of Britain's Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) said. The department handled 146 cases of children taken to countries not covered by the 1980 Hague Convention on international child abduction, compared to 105 in 2008, The Independent reported. The countries include India, Pakistan, Thailand, Ghana and Nigeria, which have not ratified the convention. The highest number of 'abductions' take place in summer, when a parent takes a child on holiday to a country where they have relatives, and then refuses to bring them home, the FCO report said.'If a parent wishes to take their child to live in a new country they will normally need either the permission of the other parent or British courts,' Foreign Office minister Jeremy Browne said.'International parental child abduction, whether intentional or not, can cause huge distress to families.'Cases where British nationals return to the country with their child following the breakdown of a relationship while the family is living abroad are also likely to be treated as abduction, he said.

US rejects motion for withdrawal of `secret` American troops operating in Pak

News posted by www.newsinfoline.com

Washington, July 29(ANI): US lawmakers have rejected a blunt challenge to President Barack Obama's war strategy, defeating a resolution calling for American troops' removal from Pakistan by a crushing 38-372 margin. The resolution proposed by Democratic Representative Dennis Kucinich and Republican Representative Ron Paul would have required the Obama administration to pull American military trainers out of Pakistan by the end of the year.Citing the 1973 War Powers Resolution, introduced after the Vietnam War, Kucinich had said that the Obama administration had violated the Act, as it "only allows the President to send US armed forces into military operations abroad if the Congress approves the decision or if the US is under a serious threat or attack"."We have known that US forces have been operating in secret inside the territories of Pakistan without congressional approval," The Daily Times had quoted Kucinich, as saying while proposing the bill."It is our constitutional responsibility as members of the Congress to act," he added. There are about 200 military personnel in Pakistan, and up to 120 are assigned to train the Pakistani military in the tribal areas along the border with Afghanistan. The US Special Operations Forces has also been allowed to operate alongside Pakistan military's Frontier Corps on humanitarian missions. However, US officials had said that the teams join the Pakistani troops only when commanders determine that there is relatively little security risk. The U.S. troops are allowed to defend themselves and return fire if attacked, but the official emphasized the joint missions are not supposed to be combat operations.Pakistan, however, has publicly stuck to its long stated objection of allowing any foreign troops from operating on its soil. Pentagon reviewing leaked classified documents to minimise risks to Afghans

News posted by www.newsinfoline.com

Washington, July 29 (ANI): The Pentagon is reported to be reviewing tens of thousands of classified battlefield reports made public this week about the war in Afghanistan to determine whether Afghan informants were identified and could be at risk of reprisals.Pentagon spokesman, Col. David Lapan, said that a Pentagon assessment team had not yet drawn any conclusions, but that "in general, the naming of individuals could cause potential problems, both to their physical safety or willingness to continue support to coalition forces or the Afghan government."A search by The New York Times through a sampling of the documents released by the organization WikiLeaks found reports that gave the names of dozens of Afghans credited with providing credible information to American and NATO troops. The Times and two other publications given access to the documents - the British newspaper The Guardian and the German magazine Der Spiegel - posted online only selected examples from documents that had been redacted to eliminate names and other information that could be used to identify people at risk. The news organizations did this to avoid jeopardizing the lives of informants. The founder of WikiLeaks, Julian Assange, has said that the organization withheld 15,000 of the approximately 92,000 documents in the archive that was released on Sunday to remove the names of informants in what he called a "harm minimization" process. But the 75,000 documents WikiLeaks put online provide information about possible informants, like their villages and in some cases their fathers' names.Meanwhile, national security officials are worried that the attention WikiLeaks has received in the past week has elevated its profile and could be used to entice disgruntled officials to send classified information to its Web site. One official said government lawyers were exploring whether WikiLeaks and its editor Julian Assange could be charged with a crime. Kuala Lumpur, Jul 29 (ANI): The Malaysian Police has rebutted Punjab Police accusations that the Sikh separatist group, Khalistan Liberation Force (KLF), has set up a base outside Kuala Lumpur. There is no evidence to support a recent claim by Punjab Police that the KLF is operating from here, said a high-ranking police officer."We can confirm there is no such group based here," said Federal Special Task Force (Operations and Counter Terrorism) director Commissioner Mohamed Fuzi Harun. He added the police kept close contact with their counterparts throughout the world to monitor militant activities, The Star reports.A Bernama report on Wednesday stated that Punjab Police believed that the KLF had set up base outside Kuala Lumpur, with at least four of its members hiding in Malaysia.Information on the KLF base in Malaysia was obtained following the arrest of a suspected militant in Punjab on Monday. The report stated that a 22-year-old arrested militant was linked to a series of bombings in the state early this year.Intelligence reports reveal he fled to Malaysia where he sought shelter from another wanted KLF militant who had been residing in Seremban for about a year."They are using Malaysia to carry out their activities," said Patiala Senior Superintendent of Police Ranbir Singh Khatra.Intelligence agencies suspect Sikh militants based outside Punjab are preparing to create mayhem in New Delhi before the Commonwealth Games in October. Islamabad crash plane`s `no-fly zone` route puts doubts over Pak air defence system

News posted by www.newsinfoline.com

Islamabad, July 29(ANI): The speculation that a Pakistani domestic airliner entered a no-fly zone in Islamabad before crashing on Wednesday morning, and the failure of the authorities concerned to react for intercepting the plane has raised question marks over the country's air defence system. When asked to comment as to why the authorities did not intercept the plane despite repeated warnings from the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) radar, the concerned authorities of the Pakistan Air Force (PAF), Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) and the civil defence organisations did not respond to the question directly, The Daily Times reports.Requesting anonymity, representatives of the organisations said: "It was not the case (sabotage act) as you think. It was the country's plane, it did not come from across the border".The authorities said that the Airblue plane was not a threat, as it had lost its route in the bad weather.Meanwhile, Pakistan's defence sources said that the country's air defence had very clear SOPs regarding the security of the Kahuta Nuclear Plant."We have clear instructions for intercepting anything having a possibility of reaching the nuclear plant," the source said. The Airblue plane, which took off at 7.50 a.m. from Karachi to Islamabad, carrying 152 people, including six crewmembers, had crashed behind the mountains of Margalla Hills. The pilot was reportedly trying to land at Islamabad on schedule at 9.30 a.m., but was told to wait as the airport was busy.According to eyewitnesses, before it crashed, the plane circled over the F-5 and F-6 sectors of the federal capital, which are close to the Presidency, the PM House, the diplomatic enclave and the Parliament House. Thousands of displaced Tamils still in camps

News posted by www.newsinfoline.com

Colombo, July 28 -- More than 35000 internally displaced Tamils continue to be in camps in northern Sri Lanka amid a cash crunch faced by a top aid agency for their welfare. Latest government statistics have revealed that at least 35333 internally displaced persons (IDPs) were still in camps set up in early 2009 for those who crossed over to the government side as the civil war came to an end in May, 2009. The government claimed to have settled 267393 IDPs till last week. Critics have pointed out that most among the "resettled" IDPs have simply been released from the main camps to be moved to transit camps or temporary accommodations; some have even set up their own tents at their own places of origin. And rehabilitation is still a long way off. Amid all this, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRCCS) have announced that it is running hugely short of funds to take care of 5000 displaced families under its care. An emergency appeal was launched in April seeking USD 3.4 million in cash, kind, or services to support the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society (SLRCS) as it assists approximately 5,000 families (25,000 people) for 24 months. "With contributions received to date, including pledges in the pipeline, the appeal is about 40 per cent covered. Funds are urgently needed to enable SLRCS to provide much needed assistance to those displaced by years of conflict," a statement from its office said.In addition, the statement said the destruction of public infrastructure, the absence of adequate medical services, livelihoods support, shelter and access to basic services are exacerbating the situation. The government and humanitarian actors estimate that the total number of houses in need of rebuilding and reconstruction is around 260,000.

Price rise forces Parliament to adjourn till Friday

News posted by www.newsinfoline.com

New Delhi, July 29 (ANI): The issue of price rise rocked the third day of Parliament's Monsoon Session on Thursday. Both the houses were adjourned till Friday.According to reports, the opposition members, demanding a thorough discussion over the price rise issue, said their protests would continue if their demands were not met.In the Lok Sabha, opposition MPs led by Sushma Swaraj demanded a discussion on the price rise issue under a rule that entails voting.Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar urged the opposition to let the Question Hour proceed, but Swaraj retorted that the only issue that would be discussed in the House was the price rise.Failing to restore order, Meira Kumar first adjourned the proceedings till 12 noon. However, with the pandemonium continuing when they reassembled, the house was adjourned for the day.In the Rajya Sabha, where Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was present during the din, was earlier adjourned till 12 noon and then for the day.Meanwhile, MPs from SP, Left and TDP parties demonstrated outside the Parliament house. The Left leaders criticised Speaker Meira Kumar for not allowing the adjournment motion and reiterated that their protests will continue despite the speaker disallowing the motion.Meanwhile, senior BJP leaders including, LK Advani, Nitin Gadkari and Sushma Swaraj, will lead a protest march to Rashtrapati Bhawan and hand over a memorandum to President Pratibha Patil on the issue. They will also hand over 10 crore signatures collected from common people over the last few months against rising prices.Besides handing over a memorandum against the price rise, party workers would also hold 'garib panchayats' at the grassroots level to involve the common man in issues like rising food prices.Party workers will also stage a 'dharna' outside all CBI offices to protest the 'misuse' of the premier investigation agency. On Wednesday, Meira Kumar rejected the opposition's demand for a vote on the price rise issue.Kumar said the price rise is a matter of concern and may be discussed in any form other than the adjournment motion. The WikiLeaks expose: A wake up call for India

News posted by www.newsinfoline.com

New Delhi, July 29 (ANI): The international flavour of the week seems to be the WikiLeaks expose of the documents concerning the operations against the Al Queda and its allies in Afghanistan. The New York Times reported on Sunday, July, 18, 2010, that military field documents included in the leak suggest that Pakistan has been allowing "representatives of its spy service to meet directly with the Taliban in secret strategy sessions to organise networks of militant groups that fight against American soldiers in Afghanistan, and even hatch plots to assassinate Afghan leaders".What this implies is that, while Washington is blindly paying Pakistan massive amounts of money, the ISI has been functioning against US interests leading to fatalities among the coalition rank and file. This may have come as a shock to people across the world but Indian security analysts have been consistently voicing their concern about Pakistani duplicity in the unholy drama that is being enacted in Afghanistan. A detailed analysis of politico-strategic postures and actions of various Pakistani governments provides empirical evidence about their close proximity to the Taliban and other terrorist organisations.Post-9/11 attack, President Bush, due to his desperation to destroy the Al Queda looked upon Pakistan as a major ally, a weakness which the Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf exploited to the hilt. The strategic dimension of the US-Pakistan partnership was hinged on hot pursuit of the militant Taliban elements into Pakistani territory. The events that unfolded on the ground were very different. Pakistan's quasi-independent North West Frontier Province continued its relationship with the Taliban built during the Russian invasion of Afghanistan and it was not very ready to provide a platform for attacks on its traditional ally. As a result, the joint effort came to a standstill due to the sharp reaction of the tribals. Musharraf was forced to look towards a policy of appeasement which did not go down well either with Afghanistan or the coalition forces.Pressure by the US resulted in the cardinal error of applying force. The rest is history. The Pakistani army got embroiled in a debilitating situation of counter- insurgency, wherein, it lost both credibility and morale. Fundamentalist forces led by the Taliban seized the opportunity to sound the clarion call of Jihad leading to unsavoury incidents like suicide attacks and the Lal Masjid imbroglio. From 2008 onwards, the NATO forces, not convinced by Pakistan's assurances of keeping its flock in check ceased being shy of launching drone attacks into Pakistani territory against Taliban hide outs. The killing of Benazir Bhutto re-established the fact that there existed very powerful, highly motivated, extremist, disruptive forces (The Taliban) in Pakistan who had the ability to strike at will and with impunity on high security targets. In March, 2008, President Musharraf abdicated power and a democratic government came to power in Pakistan. The US quickly attempted to arm twist the new dispensation into increasing support for eliminating the Taliban , but the Pakistani coalition managed to continue its policy. Thus a lid was put on American aspirations of hunting al Queda and the Taliban within Pakistan. What followed was acrimonious stand-offs, belligerent posturing and blame-games at international fora in the form of direct and unveiled accusations by Afghanistan President Hamid Karzi about Pakistan's covert support to Taliban insurgency in Afghanistan. In January 2009, a United Kingdom based think tank, International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS), came up with a very dismal report that hinted that there existed a rapidly proliferating Taliban movement in Pakistan.Barak Obama became President of the United States in January, 2009. By then the US and its partners in GWOT had embroiled themselves into a no win situation. The political sell off came in the form of the Af-Pak policy in pursuance of which Saudi and Pakistani officials, acting with tacit American encouragement, started engaging 'second tier' Taliban leaders with offers of cash and jobs but this also failed to produce tangible results.Under severe pressure, the Obama administration followed a course similar to that of the Bush regime and tried to win over Pakistan with offer of arms and funds. It continued playing down the Taliban, spread of fundamentalism and proliferation of terrorism angle. The situation was exploited to the hilt by General Ashfaq Pervez Kiyani who managed to procure weapon systems that boosted Pakistan's capacity for a conventional war, obviously against India.Washington has also given no more than lip service to India's demand that the perpetrators of the 26/11 terrorist attack on Mumbai who are based in Pakistan be brought to justice.India on its part should see the WikiLeaks expose as a reiteration of what is already known about the links that the Pakistani government has with the Taliban and other terrorist organisations operating on its soil. It is very obvious that, Pakistan is not interested in meeting the challenge of the growing fanatic Islamic orthodoxy. India's response has to be in tune with this ground reality. There should be no doubt that all terrorist organisations like the Taliban, al Queda and Lashkar-e-Taiba are operating with impunity in Pakistan. They may be loosely confederated but their agendas are being synchronised and India after Afghanistan is their prime target. By Jaibans Singh (ANI)

Taiwan chipmaker TSMC says profit up 65 percent, AS

News posted by www.newsinfoline.com

TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP) Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., the world's largest contract chipmaker, said its second quarter profit jumped 65 percent year-on-year amid strong worldwide demand for electronic goods. Net profit for the April-June period was a record 40.3 billion New Taiwan dollars ($1.3 billion) on consolidated revenue of NT$105 billion ($3.3 billion), the company said Thursday in a statement. Net profit was NT$24.4 billion a year earlier, while consolidated revenue was NT$74 billion. TSMC's chips are used in devices ranging from mobile phones to video games to computers. Demand plunged following the onset of the global financial crisis in 2008 but began to recover during the second quarter of last year. "In the second quarter, demand for TSMC's wafers continued to be strong, and wafer shipments in all major semiconductor market segments increased from their first quarter levels," the company said. Wafers are the slices of semiconductor material from which chips are cut. It said advanced process technologies 0.13-micron and below accounted for 72 percent of wafer revenues, while 90-nanometer process technology contributed 16 percent. Another 27 percent came from 65-nanometer process technology and 16 percent from 40-nanometer. ___ On the Net: TSMC: www.tsmc.com.

Panasonic buying out Sanyo, Panasonic Electric, AS

News posted by www.newsinfoline.com

TOKYO (AP) Panasonic is planning to take 100 percent ownership of its subsidiaries Sanyo Electric and Panasonic Electric Works in a move costing up to $9.4 billion to strengthen green businesses such as electric cars and solar panels. Panasonic Corp., Japan's biggest consumer electronics maker, said in a statement Thursday it will buy shares in the two companies through a public tender offer, targeting a complete purchase by April 2011. Shares in the target companies soared while Panasonic tumbled. Panasonic already owns 51 percent of Panasonic Electric Works Co., which has electric and housing operations, and owns 50.05 percent of Sanyo Electric Co., a money-losing unit with strong battery and solar panel businesses that Panasonic took over in December. Panasonic plans to spend up to 818.4 billion yen ($9.4 billion) on buying out the two companies. It said it has cash and can also borrow to finance the purchases but is also considering a share issue of up to 500 billion yen ($5.7 billion). The move underlines the strategy of Panasonic President Fumio Ohtsubo who has repeatedly said that ecological businesses, including batteries for electric vehicles and solar panels for green homes, will be the backbone of the electronics maker. Panasonic is facing touch competition not only from local rivals like Sony Corp. but also Samsung Electronics Co. of South Korea in other areas of consumer electronics such as flat TVs. "To survive the competition and to foster growth in new markets, it is essential to foster quick strategic decision-making and the strength of the company," the company said. Osaka-based Panasonic, which makes Viera TVs and Lumix digital cameras, will offer 1,110 yen per share for Panasonic Electric and 138 yen per share for Sanyo in a tender starting Aug. 23 through Oct. 6. Sanyo Electric shares shot up 27 percent in Tokyo trading to 149 yen after Japanese business daily The Nikkei reported on Panasonic's plans ahead of its announcement. Panasonic Electric jumped 15 percent to 1,124 yen but Panasonic Corp. sank 7.7 percent to 1,077 yen.

HC okays release of gangster film

News posted by www.newsinfoline.com

Mumbai, July 29 -- With producer Balaji Telefilms agreeing to issue a press statement saying the film, Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai, is not based on the life of alleged smuggler Haji Mastan, decks have been cleared for its release. The Bombay High Court was hearing a plea on Wednesday filed by Mastan's adopted son Sundar Shekhar alias Suleiman Mirza, who was seeking a stay on the movie's release and demanding a preview screening. His contention was that he needed to see the film to check whether it was defamatory. Justice R.C. Chavan did not accept Mirza's demands after Balaji Telefilms agreed to issue a statement that states that the producer has "never represented before anyone that the film is based on Haji Mastan Mirza, it is a pure work of fiction and characters therein are fictitious". The court asked the producer to issue the statement by Wednesday evening, which will be in addition to a similar disclaimer at the start of the Ajay Devgn starrer. The sessions court had on Tuesday directed the producer to issue this disclaimer. Mirza had taken exception to the fact that his late father had been portrayed as a don in the movie and had argued that though there were criminal cases registered against Mastan, there were no convictions. The film, directed by Milan Luthria, stars Ajay Devgn, Emraan Hashmi, Prachi Desai and Kangana Ranaut, and is scheduled for release on July 30.

Electronic ciggies need stronger puffs than conventional brands

News posted by www.newsinfoline.com

Washington, July 29 (ANI): The so-called "electronic cigarettes"- marketed as tobacco-free nicotine delivery systems- require more suction than conventional brands, which in turn has adverse effects on human health, according to University of California, Riverside. The researchers used a smoking machine to compare the smoking properties of eight conventional cigarettes with five e-cigarette brands. They examined the vacuum required to produce smoke (in the case of conventional cigarettes) or aerosol (in the case of e-cigarettes), and compared the density of the smoke/aerosol over time.It was found that except for one brand (Liberty Stix), higher vacuums were required to smoke e-cigarettes than conventional brands. The researchers also found that in the case of e-cigarettes, the aerosol density dropped after the first ten puffs, requiring still stronger suction thereafter to produce aerosol."It is too early to know exactly what effect stronger inhaling and diminishing amounts of aerosol will have on human health, but these factors are likely to lead to compensatory smoking, as has been seen previously with 'light' tobacco cigarettes," said Prue Talbot, a professor of cell biology and the senior author of the research paper."Our work shows that aerosol density decreases as e-cigarettes are used, requiring stronger puffs over time to sustain density. Manufacturers often claim that e-cigarettes cartridges are equivalent to a certain number of conventional cigarettes. However, this information seems misleading," said Talbot.Talbot's lab found that while the first ten puffs of an e-cigarette are similar to a conventional cigarette, later puffs were highly variable in aerosol density and do not duplicate smoking of conventional brands. The researchers found that even though one e-cigarette cartridge may smoke for 200 puffs, cartridges do not smoke uniformly for those 200 puffs and therefore do not duplicate nicotine delivery of individual conventional cigarettes."Our results show that e-cigarettes smoke very differently than conventional brands. In preliminary trials, we observed that some brands of e-cigarettes were difficult to smoke possibly because they have relatively small air intake holes. Moreover, the interior of e-cigarettes is dense compared to the relatively porous tobacco-containing cigarettes," said Talbot."Based on the results of this paper, not only do users become more aware of the vapor characteristics and smoking properties of e-cigarettes but also manufacturers of e-cigarettes will take notice of the functional inconsistencies of their products," he said. The results of the study appeared in Nicotine and Tobacco Research. Iconic Aussie kangaroo actually descended from South America!

News posted by www.newsinfoline.com

Melbourne, July 29 (ANI): The kangaroo and all other Aussie marsupials, such as wombats and Tassie devils, have a common South American ancestor, suggests new research.According to previous research, the marsupial family tree began in what is now Australia some 120 million years ago with some migrating to South America while it, Australia and Antarctica were one giant land mass.Thereafter, South American marsupials began their own evolutionary journey when the continents split nearly 80 million years ago. However, scientists found few fossils to support the theories.Researchers at Germany's Munster University turned to an unusual genetic marker to unravel the mystery. They analysed the genomes of the South American opossum and the Australian tammar wallaby, as well as the DNA of 20 other marsupials for a "jumping gene" called retroposons.Even as the rest of an animal's genetic code can mutate, retroposons and their locations are stable, making them a reliable indicator of relationships between animals. The scientists found all marsupials shared the same 10 retroposons, meaning they all descended form a common ancestor, reports The Courier Mail. However, since South American marsupials had fewer retroposon updates, they are the older branches of the marsupial tree. The scientists concluded that the single ancestor of Australian marsupials migrated from South America - and not the other way around - before the landmass split.Their findings of the study appear in the journal PLoS Biology. Ankara, July 29 (ANI): Archaeologists have uncovered an ancient Roman personal care set at Myra-Andriake in Antalya's district of Demre, Turkey.Professor Nevzat Cevi, an academic from Akdeniz University's Archeology Department and colleagues excavated an 1800-year-old pair of bronze tweezers and a manicure rasp at Andriake Port."Now, we are aware that the Lycian women of the Roman period 1,800 years ago were living well-groomed by using a pair of tweezers, rasp and mirror," The Hurriyet Daily News quoted Cevi as saying.Meanwhile, a team of Swedish scientists have unearthed a dildo-like object, about 4 inches (10.5 cm) long and 0.8 inches (2 cm) in diameter, according to LiveScience."Your mind and my mind wanders away to make this interpretation about what it looks like - for you and me, it signals this erected-penis-like shape," said archaeologist Geran Gruber of the National Heritage Board in Sweden, who worked on the excavation.Gruber suggested that in addition to its obvious use, the object might have been used as a tool, such as to chip flakes of flint. Sea snail saliva could revolutionize severe pain treatment

News posted by www.newsinfoline.com

Washington, July 29 (ANI): Scientists have developed what they claim could be the most potent treatment for severe pain - as potent as morphine.A sea snail's saliva contains chemicals that help the slow-moving creatures catch prey. These chemicals are injected into passing prey with hypodermic-needle-like teeth that shoot from their mouths like harpoons.Scientists already have transformed one of these chemicals into a pain-reliever for humans, but it has to be injected directly into the spinal cord, limiting its use.The upside is that there's no risk of addiction, according to the experts.Australian scientists, meanwhile, have developed an oral form of the painkiller that can work in low doses. Sony surprises with Q1 profit, raises outlook

News posted by www.newsinfoline.com

Sony Corp surprised investors by lifting its annual outlook after returning to the black in the first quarter thanks to improved demand for Bravia flat TVs and PlayStation 3 game consoles.Rivals Panasonic Corp and Sharp Corp also reported profits for April-June, compared with losses a year earlier, underscoring healthy consumer demand for LCD televisions, PCs and other electronics goods.Panasonic joined Sony in edging up its annual outlook and unveiled plans for a $5.7 billion share offering to fund a buyout of two units as it seeks to cut overlap and expand sales of energy and environment related products.Investors remain cautious about the prospects for electronics maker's profits given the yen's persistent strength and tough competition with South Korean rivals such as Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics."It (Sony) did well in the April quarter with aggressive marketing, especially in its TV business, but its growth rate will slow down in the current quarter because overall TV sales are weakening in line with a softening global economy," said Park Young-Joo, an analyst at Woori Investment and Securities in Seoul.Sony, the world's second-largest camera maker after Canon Inc, reported April-June operating profit of 67 billion yen ($766 million) versus the consensus for a 13 billion yen loss in a poll of four analysts and a loss of 25.7 billion yen a year ago.Sony cited big improvements in sales of Bravia LCD TVs, Vaio PCs and Playstation 3 game consoles and software, while also benefitting from Chief Executive Howard Stringer's aggressive cost-cutting implemented in the last financial year."Sony's results far exceeded market expectations. The main drivers were stronger demand for electronics products and solid demand from China and emerging markets like Latin America," Anita Huang, manager of ING's Japan Fund, said. She said the fund plans to buy more shares of Sony due to the better-than-expected results. For the year to March 2011, the electronics and entertainment giant lifted its operating profit outlook by 12.5 percent to 180 billion yen, compared with the 152.6 billion consensus from 22 analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.The Japanese firms' results were more upbeat than LG Electronics, which announced a worse-than-expected 90 percent fall in quarterly profit on Wednesday, hit by poor TV and mobile handset sales.Sony shares rose 0.1 percent ahead of the announcement, while Sharp lost 1 percent and Panasonic tumbled 7.7 percent in heavy volume in a fall triggered by an earlier Reuters report of its capital raising plan.Sony's mobile phone joint venture with Ericsson, Sony Ericsson, posted a second consecutive quarterly profit earlier in the month, recovering from a dismal 2009 on robust demand for smartphones.(Additional reporting by Nathan Layne in TOKYO and Faith Hung in TAIPEI, Editing by Jean Yoon and Anshman Daga)(For more business news on Reuters India click http://in.reuters.com)

Sanofi-Aventis likely to buy Genzyme for USD 19 bn : Report

News posted by www.newsinfoline.com

New York, July 29 (PTI) French drug maker Sanofi-Aventis is likely to make an formal offer to acquire US-based biotech company Genzyme for USD 19 billion, says a media report. Attributing the development to people familiar with the matter, The New York Times reported that Sanofi board agreed to let management make a formal proposal. Sanofi-Aventis, has significant presence in India and employs over 1800 people in the country. The company may make an offer of up to USD 70 a share for Genzyme, which would value US-based company''s equity at about USD 18.6 billion, the report noted. According to the publication, Sanofi would likely issue a bear hug letter that would outline its proposed bid. Such a letter is friendly on its surface, but signals a willingness to go hostile if necessary. The report said that the move could put pressure on Genzyme''s directors, some of whom have been more receptive to Sanofi''s informal approach than others. A bear hug letter could also rally Genzyme shareholders. Genzyme''s shares have climbed about 26 percent since reports surfaced last Friday of Sanofi''s approach. Sanofi approached Genzyme earlier this year about a potential combination, one that would bolster Sanofi''s drug pipeline and significantly increase its presence in bio-pharmaceuticals. If Sanofi continues to pursue Genzyme, it will need to deal with two formidable activist investors Carl C Icahn and Ralph Whitworth, who hold stakes in the biotech company and have representatives on the Genzyme board. Both have pushed Genzyme to take steps to increase its stock price, the report added. Last year, Sanofi- Aventis announced a bid to acquire 80 per cent stake in Hyderbad-based Shantha Biotechnics for USD 784 million. PTI SP.

Sun Pharma wins patent case against Eli Lily

News posted by www.newsinfoline.com

Sun Pharma claimed victory over Eli Lily and Co in a patent litigation over Gemzar, used in cancer treatment, with a US federal court ruling in its favour.Eli Lily had contended that an abbreviated new drug application (ANDA) by Sun infringed its patent on the active ingredient used in Gemzar."The US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit affirmed the judgement of the US District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan against Eli Lily and Co. finding certain claims of US Patent No. 5,464,826 (826 patent) invalid," Sun said in a statement. In the Michigan lawsuit, Eli Lilly had contented that Sun Pharma's ANDA infringed certain claims from the 826 patent and US Patent No. 4,808,614 (614 patent) that described gemcitabine and its uses -- the active ingredient in Gemzar.Earlier the Michigan District Court had ruled against Eli Lily stating that the asserted claims of the 826 patent are invalid for obviousness-type double patenting over US Patent No. 4,808,614 (614 patent), Sun said. The Appeals Court agreed with the ruling of the District Court, and noted that the Michigan Court had correctly followed the Federal Circuit's precedent regarding double patenting.Sun said the federal court has ruled Eli Lily's patent invalid, that would have expired on November 7, 2012, and would have had pediatric exclusivity through May 7, 2013.It, however, said that another patent '614', not part of the appeal, expired on May 15, 2010, but has pediatric exclusivity through November 15, 2010.

Oil hovers around $77 per barrel

News posted by www.newsinfoline.com

Oil was steady around $77 on Thursday after falling in the past two sessions on weak durable good data and the biggest weekly increase in crude inventories for nearly two years in the United States.US crude stocks surged 7.31 million barrels last week as imports jumped, government statistics showed on Wednesday, while the nation's gasoline and distillate stocks including diesel gained for the fifth and ninth consecutive weeks respectively.Wall Street slipped on Wednesday and Asian shares slid on Thursday after new orders for long-lasting manufactured goods posted their largest decline since August, a fresh sign the US economy slowed in the second quarter."The crude market has shown the economy is not absorbing the supply, nor is the motivation there for refiners to process those supplies," said Jonathan Barratt, managing director at Commodity Broking Services in Sydney. "The numbers in America are not that good."US crude for September advanced 13 cents to $77.12 a barrel at 0457 GMT, after dropping close to 0.7 per cent on Wednesday, having touched $79.69 a day earlier, the highest price in almost 12 weeks. ICE Brent gained 5 cents to $76.11."We have tested $80 twice and failed. Now we are going to test lower into the range again," Barratt said, referring to the $70-$80 range within which oil has traded for nearly two months. The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) has for the past year and a half expressed a preference for oil to remain stable around $75 a barrel, saying that price encourages investment to sustain and increase production capacity and does not threaten the economic recovery."In a crisis situation you need stability," Barratt said. "Crude is very stable. This suggests to me that the forces of supply and demand are at ease with each other."Oil analysts including Michael Wittner from Societe Generale pointed out that total US product demand growth was robust at 3.4 per cent over the past four weeks from a year earlier, according to EIA figures. But supply accumulation is outpacing consumption at a time when the US economy is recovering from the most severe recession of the post-war era.The US economy kept growing overall in recent weeks, but unevenly and it actually slowed in a few regions as housing markets softened after the end of a popular tax break, the Federal Reserve said on Wednesday.Last week's gain in US crude stockpiles was the biggest since October 2008, according to statistics from the US Energy Information Administration, which published Wednesday's inventory report. US weekly crude imports reached 11.12 million barrels last week, the highest level since August 2006.Many analysts had expected total crude stocks to be lower on disruptions from Tropical Storm Bonnie as it approached the Gulf of Mexico last week. But Bonnie dissipated at the weekend, without damaging regional energy infrastructure, although some oil production was interrupted late in the week.

CWG are India``s Games not of Mani or Kalmadi

News posted by www.newsinfoline.com

New Delhi, July 29 (PTI) Coming down heavily on critics of the upcoming Commonwealth Games, Congress MP Rajiv Shukla today said the multi-discipline event belonged to India and not to any individual. A lot of people, including former Sports Minister Mani Shankar Aiyar, are staunch critics of the Games who believe that the country did not need the event and all the spending on it was sheer waste of money. The bickering reached a crescendo when Aiyar said he would be unhappy if the Games will be conducted successfully and reacting to it Organising Committee Chairman Kalmadi termed the fellow Congress leader as anti-national. Shukla said it''s time that everyone forgets the difference and work towards a brilliant organisation of the Games, scheduled for October 3-14 here. "These are India''s Games not of Mani Shakar''s or Kalmadi''s. This is not the time for criticism or counter criticism. Only 60 days are left and now we all should work towards a successful conduct of the Games," Shukla told reporters outside the Parliament. "The issues can be discussed after the Games," he added. The build up to the Games has already been marred by delay in the completion of the venues and reports of alleged corruption in the creation of infrastructure.

Akram says `knee-jerk` reactions bane of Pak cricket

News posted by www.newsinfoline.com

Lahore, July 29(ANI): Former Pakistan captain Wasim Akram has called for stability in the national team, and urged the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to stick with newly-appointed skipper Salman Butt."Shahid Afridi was appointed for a year and out of the blue he disappeared after one Test. That was a joke," Wasim wrote in an article for ESPN.About the idea of recalling former captains Younis Khan and Mohammad Yousuf, he said that it would only hamper the team's progress."There is a lot of hue and cry about Younis Khan and Mohammad Yousuf, but I think it's time to move on. This team doesn't want those two players, the cricket board doesn't want them," Akram said."Move on, have a new captain, have new players, you'll probably lose one or two, but eventually in a year's time your team will be stronger.""Salman is confident, a good leader and he's got guts. I have a feeling if he doesn't do well against England they will probably bring those two players back and bring in some other captain. That's the problem with Pakistan cricket," he added.Akram was also of the opinion that Butt should back youngsters in the Test series against England, starting on Thursday at Trent Bridge."It's like what's happening in the country as a whole, it's part of the culture and cricket is the same," he added. Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson has achieved astonishing success with young players in the past and his current squad show signs of being another golden generation."We're good at developing young players with spirit, it's always been a strong part of our club," Ferguson told reporters after a youthful United team had beaten Major League Soccer's 'All Stars' 5-2 on Wednesday.Whereas Ferguson's original set of kids, including David Beckham, Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes and Gary Neville, were British, the current crop features a sprinkling of imports.Alongside defender Jonny Evans, midfielders Tom Cleverley and Darron Gibson and forward Danny Welbeck, Ferguson can turn to 22-year-old Mexican Javier Hernandez and 18-year-old Italian Federico Macheda. The forward pair showed their quality with well-taken goals --two for Macheda -- in Wednesday's 5-2 friendly win over the MLS eleven.Premier League rules restrict squads to 25 players this season meaning some, such as Wellbeck and Mame Biram Diouf could be loaned out to get further experience. However, Macheda and Hernandez will be part of Ferguson's first team attacking options. The United manager has no doubt that the pair have what it takes to be successful at Old Trafford."I need to keep Macheda and Hernandez, who just joined the club, that's imperative. There's a purpose there in the way they play their football," said Ferguson."It's not just talent. You don't play at our club with just talent, you play with something, and they've got something else. I'm pleased with that."Hernandez's pace is an asset that the United manager is keen to exploit but he says it remains to be seen what kind of partnership he could strike up with Wayne Rooney."The one thing defenders always worry about is players with speed. They always worry about the space behind them. Of course, when you see his goal, it's an indication of that speed."How the combination with Wayne will work, I think we need to adjust a little bit to it because I think both could be similar types of players."There are still little things to do but not a great deal in terms of his technique and things like that. I think once he gets used to our training, he'll be okay."(Editing by Alastair Himmer)

Pakistan plane crash: 58 bodies identified, DNA tests on others

News posted by www.newsinfoline.com

Islamabad, July 29 (IANS) Only 58 bodies of the 152 killed when an Airbus A-321 crashed in the Margalla Hills near this Pakistani capital have been identified, officials said Thursday, adding that DNA tests would be carried out on the others. The bodies that could be identified have been handed over to family members, Geo News reported Thursday, when Pakistan observed a day of mourning for those killed in the country's worst aviation disaster. The Airblue aircraft carrying 152 people crashed amid heavy rain near here Wednesday morning. The plane, flying from Karachi to Islamabad, suddenly lost contact with the airport and crashed near the popular Damanekoh resort in the Margalla Hills.Interior Minister Rehman Malik said the body parts beyond recognition were going to be DNA tested Thursday. An official said the DNA test process would take about a week to complete and thereafter the bodies would be handed to the families.Family members of the dead passengers were inconsolable. Relatives broke down when they were handed over the bodies of their loved ones. The wait was particularly agonising for those who were not able to identify their near and dear ones.Rescuers, who faced difficulty in the inaccessible terrain, managed to collect bodies and body parts that were taken to the PIMS Hospital.PIMS Hospital officials said a team of 50 doctors had been constituted to identify the bodies.Another official said the wreckage of the plane was scattered in the hilly area and they were looking for the black box.It has been raining intermittently in Islamabad, hampering search efforts.'Rescue teams will resume the search operation as soon as it stops raining as we still have to find the black box,' The News International quoted Bani Amin, a police official, as saying.'Our main concern is to find identification papers and other belongings of the passengers, which will greatly help identify the bodies lying in the hospitals. We may also find some body pieces during the search but it all depends how quickly it stops raining,' he said.Airblue, a private airline, has been operating since 2004, using new Airbus A-320 and A-321 aircraft on domestic routes and international services to Dubai, Sharjah, Abu Dhabi, Muscat and Manchester. In 1992, a PIA Airbus crashed into a cloud-covered hillside on approach to Kathmandu, killing 167 people.
